Burwell & Exning move top of Onyx League Division One table despite defeat to Wisbech Town
Despite suffering their first defeat of the season, Burwell & Exning have gone top of the early Onyx League Division One standings.
Paul Summerskill’s side (224), who had won their first three matches of 2025, were beaten by 16 runs on Saturday at the hands of Wisbech Town (240).
Having been inserted into the field after losing the toss, Burwell & Exning had three bowlers take a trio of wickets. Nic Huckle (3-18) was the most economical, followed by Dan Baigent (3-48) and Tom Mangelsen (3-64).
In reply, the hosts lost their opening three batsmen – Simon Donald (15), Anders Bester (0) and Dylan Hardy (10) – early on.
However, captain Summerskill (107) kept the scoreboard ticking over with a century to move himself up to fourth in this season’s Division One run-scoring chars.
But wickets continued to fall at the other end and despite a knock of 26 from Mangelsen and 20 courtesy of Baigent, Burwell & Exning finished up short of their target.
Nevertheless, the 13 points collected from the encounter has seen Summerskill’s charges open up a six-point advantage over second-placed Foxton Granta at the summit.
Burwell & Exning will aim to bounce back on Saturday (17 May) away at Ramsey.
